A Hobby That Became A Career
Like everybody else, I enjoy watching TV. So much so, that I used to spend hours in front of it, my hand glued to the
remote control. Without even knowing it, I began learning English the hard way, by watching movies and reading the subtitles.
Then I went to college, where, after four years of classes and trainings, I got a degree in Translation and Interpretation,
with special focus on Simultaneous Interpretation.
But the passion for TV watching never faded. So as soon as I found out that a national TV station was looking for
translators, I immediately went there. I didn't waste time sending in a resume and waiting to be contacted. I told myself
"it's now or never". So I went there, I took a test (translating about 20 minutes of film without script) and the next
thing I knew I was hired.
And this, as they say, was "the beginning of a beautiful friendship". Translating movies for subtitling is almost a second
nature for me. Helping people who don't speak English enjoy series like "M*A*S*H*", "La Femme Nikita", "Married
With Children", "Who's The Boss?", "Taxi", "Cheers" and "Walker, Texas Ranger", to name but a few, is both a hobby and an
accomplishment for me.
I guess I can count myself among the few lucky people who get to make a living doing something they like. And there's
nothing better than doing something you really, thoroughly enjoy - that makes you want to improve yourself and your work all
the time.
Hobbies and personal interests
Other than translation, travelling is my favorite hobby. Especially travelling abroad, seeing new cultures, understanding
new ways of thinking... I think it tremendously enriches one's life. I hope to be able soon to post new pictures from some
of the cities I visited. If you would like to take a virtual tour of some major cities in Europe, such as Amsterdam, Barcelona,
London, Lisbon, Paris, visit the link below.
